Great Blue Heron titled “Time to Soar”

$2,600.00

24” x 48”

This is an original mixed media painting of a Great Blue Heron in flight.  I always know Spring is here when I start seeing these beauties in the ponds and marshes around the Highlands. I’ve struggled for years as to how to incorporate my maternal indigenous lineage in my expression.  I was worried about Cultural appropriation, because I’ve had no exposure to that heritage.  My mom’s dad was Ojibwe, but abandoned as a very young child, had a very difficult life, and shame and rage was how he expressed himself. He died young, and alone from alcoholism.  It is a sad story, but a common one for the period.  I’ve always wondered if my passion for nature was from that dna in my veins.  I’ll never know, but I can celebrate it, so I have.  After many years, my work feels authentic and complete with the addition of the Ojibwe language.  The word Nimishoomis means My grandfather.
